Experimental flat flame study of monoterpenes: Insights into the combustion kinetics of ?-pinene, ?-pinene, and myrcene

Pinenes and pinene dimers have similar energy densities to petroleum-based fuels are regarded as alternative fuels. The pyrolysis of the pinenes is well studied, but information on their combustion kinetics limited. Three stoichiometric, flat premixed flames C10H16 monoterpenes ?-pinene, ?-pinene, myrcene were investigated by synchrotron-based photoionization molecular-beam mass spectrometry (PI-MBMS) at Advanced Light Source (ALS). This technique allows isomer-resolved identification quantification flame species formed during process. Flame-sampling even enables detection very reactive radical species. Myrcene was chosen because its known formation ?-pinene pyrolysis. quantitative speciation data discussed decomposition steps provide important for development future chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms concerning combustion. main starts with unimolecular cleavage carbon-carbon single bond between two allylic carbon atoms. Aromatic phenylacetylene (C8H6), styrene (C8H8), xylenes (C8H10), indene (C9H8) could be clearly identified higher concentrations Consequently, a sooting tendency can generally expected this monoterpene. presented three give insights into kinetics.
